Bright Future Predicted for Rog Bicycles

Gorenje to takeover the famous Slovenian bike manufacturer

Back in the days of Yugoslavia, Rog was one of the best known Slovenian companies. It has been producing bicycles in Ljubljana since the early 1950s and at its height in the 1980s it was making around 350,000 bikes every year. When Yugoslavia broke up and Slovenia became independent, Rog became part of the Elan group which is well known for making skis and ski equipment among other sporting goods but when the parent company fell into difficulties in recent years, the future of Rog became uncertain.

Happily help has turned up from an unlikely source —none other than the Gorenje group, which is best known for the manufacture of domestic appliances. Gorenje is one of Slovenia’s biggest exporting companies so its expertise should reap dividends for Rog. And what’s more, BTC City, the company which owns Ljubljana’s largest shopping complex, is also going to invest in Rog; the company is already active in several cycling initiatives and is keen to help promote Slovenian bikes.

Manufacture and R&D will be based in Velenje, where Gorenje has its headquarters.
