Property Tax to Be Postponed until 2012
Ljubljana, 14 October (STA) – Due to many mistakes in the country’s first real estate census, a new property tax will most likely be introduced only in 2012, not in 2011 as originally planned, Finance Minister Franc Krizanic said after the government session on Thursday.
The delay is a result of changes that will have to be made in the property register after property owners established a number of mistakes in the census results, Krizanic said. Earlier this month households received an appraisal of their properties, which will form the basis of a real estate tax. A public outcry ensued as a lot of data, especially on
ownership, turned out to be wrong. Owners have until 25 November to report mistakes.
Krizanic could not say when the government would adopt the new tax bill because the coalition partners are still discussing the details of the new tax. The responsibility for the delay lies with the Surveying and Mapping Authority (GURS) but the government bears supreme responsibility for such matters, which is why it debated possible remedy
measures today, Prime Minister Borut Pahor said. Pahor added that GURS would draft a report about the census and submit it to the Environment and Spatial Planning Ministry and then to the government, which will find appropriate property taxation solutions.
