Citizens of the European Union Member States (and of the Member States of the European Economic Area - EEA) may enter the Republic of Slovenia with a valid identity card or a valid passport and do not require a visa or a residence permit. A more favourable treatment for entry and residence is also accorded to their family members.
Third-country nationals must acquire a visa or a residence permit from Slovenia's diplomatic mission abroad before their arrival in the Republic of Slovenia.
You do not need a visa to enter Slovenia for tourist, business or personal reasons, if you have your valid passport with you. You can stay here for a maximum of 90 days in a six-month period, starting from the date of the first entry.
If you are not sure whether you need an entry visa for Slovenia or not, contact us for more information, we’ll be glad to help you!
You can enter Slovenia with the following documents:
If you wish to enter Slovenia and stay here for a longer period of time than permitted on the basis of a valid passport, identity card or visa, you are required to obtain a residence permit.
1. Temporary residence permit: you apply for this permit when you have a provable purpose of residence in Slovenia. When you meet the conditions, a permit is issued for a fixed period (not more than one year). You extend it under the same conditions as it was issued to you. An application to obtain the first temporary residence permit may be lodged either by you or your employer, and it shall be filed with the diplomatic mission or consulate of the Republic of Slovenia abroad. If you are legally residing in Slovenia at the time of issuing the first permit in the Republic of Slovenia and you have already submitted your fingerprints at a diplomatic mission or consulate of the Republic of Slovenia abroad, the first temporary residence permit may be served in the Republic of Slovenia by the competent authority that issued the first temporary residence permit (at the administrative unit in the area where you reside).
2. Permanent residence permit: you apply for this permit after a fixed, continuous and lawful period of residence in Slovenia. It is issued without limitation of duration, and in the application you also do not need to show the purpose of permanent residence in Slovenia.
In the process of obtaining a residence permit or registering their residence, foreigners are obliged to obtain a tax number in order to have access to compulsory social security coverage.
