Bled and Gorenjska

The northwestern town of Bled is Slovenia’s most popular holiday resort. The beautiful setting of the lake, church and castle attract both Slovenians and overseas visitors. Bled makes an excellent base for tourists wanting to access the Triglav National Park and the Julian Alps.

Lake Bled

Lake Bled, from which the town takes its name, is just three miles in circumference but its beauty and its stunning setting has captivated visitors for centuries. In the centre of the island which can be visited by one of the many famous ‘pletna’-boats, and it is customary to climb the 99 steps to the medieval chapel to ring the wishing bell. In ancient times, the people came to worship Živa, the Slavic goddess of love and fertility. In later times, Christian pilgrims visited the island to praise St. Mary. The island in the center, of Lake Bled is actually the only island in Slovenia.

The best view of the lake and the stunning scenery that surrounds it can be seen from the Bled Castle, which dates from the 11th century and is situated on a rocky outcrop around 100 meters over the Lake.

The Town

Bled celebrated its 1,000th anniversary in 2004 and there has been a health and thermal springs in the area since the Bronze Age. Today Bled is regaining its popularity and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in all of Slovenia. Most hotels are relatively new and clustered at one end of the lake, with the exception being Vila Bled, once the private residence of the former Yugoslav leader Tito and now converted into a popular deluxe hotel.

There is a restaurant in the castle and also a museum tracing the history of Bled from its beginnings in the middle ages to its place as a major tourist attraction today. The town of Bled is an important convention centre and tourist resort, offering numerous sporting activities (golf, fishing, riding and hiking) as well as being convenient for mountain treks and hikes. The town of Bled has many cosmopolitan bars and restaurants.

Gorenjska

The region Bled is located in is home to most of Slovenians tallest mountains, including the Country’s highest Mount Triglav, at just less than 2900m. This region offers some of the most beautiful and breathtaking scenery in all of Slovenia. The Julian Alps and the stunning Triglav National Park are within Gorenska and so is Slovenia’s other famous lake – Lake Bohinj. Skiing takes place at a number of places, with Kranska Gora being the most popular with skiers.

Getting to Bled

By Air:

Ljubljana – Brnik International Airport is just 36 km away. Regular daily services operate between Ljubljana Airport and all major European destinations.

By Car:

Bled is about 40 minutes, from the capital Ljubljana and only 47 km from Slovenia’s borders with Austria and Italy.

By Railway:

Lesce Bled station is on the main line between the cities of Munich, Salzburg, Villach, Ljubljana, Belgrade, Athens and Istanbul. The station is conveniently located just 4 km from the town. Bled – Jezero station is on the route between Villach, Jesenice and Nova Gorica.
